  17.      The _f_m_p_r_e_f_s customization panel allows the user to define a default
  18.      layout for their directory views (_d_i_r_v_i_e_w_s).  The file manager _f_m applies
  19.      these settings when displaying a directory view for the first time.
  20.      Three of the settings apply to all dirviews -- new and old, open and
  21.      closed -- and are called Global Settings.

  24.      The _f_m_p_r_e_f_s panel can be launched from the toolchest (Desktop > Customize
  25.      > Icon Views) or from a Unix shell command line.  Like most other
  26.      customization panels, the desktop panel has the ``runonce'' feature,
  27.      meaning only one instance of the application will run at one time.
  28.      Attempting to launch the application a second time will have the effect
  29.      of deiconifying the application window or popping it to the top on the
  30.      current desk.

  77.      Each on/off toggle allows the user to choose whether each of the
  78.      corresponding dirview elements should appear or not by default.  For
  79.      example, turning on the Content Viewer causes the dirview media viewer or
  80.      content viewer to appear by default.

  82.      The Global Settings are unique in that they are not only defaults, but
  83.      also take effect immediately in all opened dirviews.  Thus clicking in
  84.      the Pathfinder toggle causes all dirviews to hide the upper area showing
  85.      the drop pocket and full pathname, freeing more window area for viewing
  86.      files and folders.  The Dynamic Help toggles comments at the bottom of
  87.      dirview windows.

  89.      The Sort and View menus control the default sorting and presentation of
  90.      icons in a dirview.  The Dirview Icon Size controls how large the icons
  91.      should appear in a dirview; scaling the icon affects the icon size in all
  92.      viewing modes (Icon, Column, and List).

  94.      New in IRIX 6.5 are the Preserve Layout When Opening in Place,
  95.      Pathfinder, and Truncated Names settings:

  97.      *    Checking the Preserve Layout When Opening in Place toggle can be
  98.           useful when you need to search for a file somewhere in an FTP, Web,
  99.           or directory hierarchy and you prefer that the dirview window not
  100.           change to different layouts as you traverse into different folders.

  102.      *    The Pathfinder setting is described in a previous paragraph.

  104.      *    Checking the Truncated Names toggle will make the file manager hide
  105.           the middle sections of long filenames, showing an ellipsis (...) for
  106.           the temporarily hidden text.  This can be useful when viewing Web
  107.           sites or FTP sites in a dirview, as the long URL filenames can be
  108.           cumbersome.  (To view a Web site or FTP site in a dirview, simply
  109.           type the URL into the pathfinder.)

  119.      The fmprefs panel records the user's preferences in a small file (about
  120.      100 bytes in size) called _D_e_f_a_u_l_t in the special _l_a_y_o_u_t_s directory.  In
  121.      this directory, the file manager records and reads the layouts for each
  122.      folder the user has (ever) opened.  Each desktop user has one layouts
  123.      directory, and it resides in their $_H_O_M_E/._d_e_s_k_t_o_p-<_h_o_s_t_n_a_m_e> folder
  124.      (where $_H_O_M_E is the user's home directory, and <_h_o_s_t_n_a_m_e> is the name of
  125.      the host as returned by the _h_o_s_t_n_a_m_e(_1) command).

  140.      The fmprefs panel also records resources needed to present itself
  141.      appropriately to the user.  These resources are written to the file
  142.      _F_m_p_r_e_f_s in the user's $_H_O_M_E/._d_e_s_k_t_o_p-<_h_o_s_t_n_a_m_e> folder.

  145.      In IRIX 6.5, the fmprefs panel sends messages to the file manager by
  146.      saving settings to the special _F_m_S_t_a_t_e file in the $_H_O_M_E/._d_e_s_k_t_o_p-

  148.      applies the settings in the desktop environment.  The _F_m_S_t_a_t_e file is not
